Long Island children's sports coach laments parent's overreactions: 'Why are... the Moms acting this way?'

Every kid's sports team has a handful of parents who love to coach from the sidelines. Instead of just letting their 7-year-olds run around and play, they get red in the face from hollering at the coaches and referees. 

My favorite ages to watch kids play sports are when they're in pre-K or kindergarten, and they have 0 idea what's going on. Some of the players have no focus. Some will sit down in the grass to pick flowers and point out bugs. Some will get stage fright and retreat to their parents' arms to watch from the sidelines. And best of all are the determined little sluggers who will do things like proudly kicking a soccer goal into their own net, scoring a point for the other team, but still celebrating valiantly. Or if it's a T-ball game, they'll run to first base, then refuse to run any further, even with all the encouragement in the world. At this age, no one takes the game seriously. So it's fascinating to watch the same parents, just a few years later, get super worked up over children's sports. 

This person shared their "coaching nightmare" happening with their local 1st graders (a group of kids who are certainly still in that aforementioned age range who can't take sports seriously). They're a volunteer coach, but they're growing weary of the parents who can't stop coaching from the sidelines, with some parents going so far as to "trash-talk" them. That's so ridiculous! As one commenter noted, "Sports parents have been embarrassing since the beginning of time." I promise, your child is not going to lose a potential college sports scholarship just because the coach didn't put her in the game at age 6, but these parents will never learn their lessons.

    is going on. i coached my kids t-ball and it was the moms who drove me nuts the whole time trying to teach me how to coach. i figured it was a baseball thing so i just said never again. now im coaching my kids football and again its only the moms

    yelling at me. if the moms want to coach so bad why dont they sign up to be the coach? all these sports are always looking for coaches i volunteer my time for free. why are the dads quiet but moms are acting this way? also its always the worse kid on team

    whos mom is talking trash to me most. were talking t-ball and 1st grade football what are the moms expectations? when i was in school my mom never said a word to a coach i dont think my dad even did.

    Bnandez I cant stand the parents that say, "this coach doesn't know what he's doing..." yet they dont volunteer or only show up to a few games. I admittedly dont know what im doing. I know my role and I keep my mouth shut.

My son wanted to try basketball, which I know nothing about but the league had more teams then coaches so even though my knowledge was limited I volunteered. I figured the kids were 7 and I could handle it. The dads were insane. The league had rules on playing time, which I

    liked, and they would be super ped when I pulled their kid out. I was told the good kids should stay in so they could run up the score. And this was a church league. Total nut jobs.

    yankeejohn I coached Varsity level in two sports for just under 25 years. When I started out it was the dads that would approach about playing time, where their kid should play, what I should do etc. About 10 years ago it switched over to the moms. I don't know why exactly, but thats what happened.
